North Lincolnshire Council are urging residents in Scunthorpe and the surrounding areas to move towards a greener method of garden waste disposal.

This follows the introduction of a new scheme in July, whereby residents can replace their garden waste bins with free compost bins.

Alternatively, people can choose to increase the size of their garden waste bin from 140 litres to 240 litres for an annual cost of £39.

The hope is that this will reduce the need for households to travel to waste recycling sites as often, therefore reducing their carbon footprint.

Almost 400 people have already signed up for a new composter under the Grow Don’t Throw scheme.

Councillor Rob Waltham, Leader of North Lincolnshire Council, said:

“This is fundamentally about two things; protecting the environment and offering residents a choice as to what best suits their needs.

“The existing 140 litre brown scheme will remain free of charge, making us one of the only councils in the county to provide a free universal garden waste collection service.

“We’ve seen in the last few months the overwhelming community response to protecting each other against Covid-19 – the response was based on lots of us doing small things which collectively make a big difference.

“The message holds true when it comes to ensuring we protect the environment for generations to come.

“We know some people can compost at home, we know some people really value the existing garden waste collection and we know for others this enhanced service will make a big difference.”

Councillor David Rose added:

“Our commitment to protecting and enhancing the environment of North Lincolnshire is for the residents who live here today but also for our children tomorrow.

“The charge at £39 is competitive and only recovers the council’s costs for providing the additional service.

“We continue to make great strides, reducing our carbon footprint while enhancing the places and spaces of North Lincolnshire. This latest offer for residents is just one of many measures we are implementing to enable our communities to flourish.”
