Recruitment has now begun at Scunthorpe’s new Lidl store as building work nears completion ahead of the stores opening this autumn.

The store will fill one of two units at a new retail park on Dudley Road.

Lidl have not yet announced an opening date for what will be the town’s second Lidl store, although it is expected to create around 40 full and part time jobs.

The new store will have a bakery, and around 218 car park spaces.

There have been a serious of proposed plans for the site, including a suggestion that it might be used for housing.

However none of the plans were granted planning permission until North Lincolnshire Council approved the Lidl scheme last March.

A number of plans to turn the brownfield site into housing had been proposed over the years but were abandoned without getting planning permission.

In light of the new store, improvements are being made to the Queensway junction with Dudley Road.

It is hoped that this will allow traffic into the site more easily.

A new footpath and cycle path has also recently been added to the opposite side of the road.

Competitor Aldi has also announced plans to open 11 new stores in Lincolnshire, including one in Scunthorpe.

Ciaran Aldridge, National Property Director at Aldi UK, said:

“Aldi is growing rapidly and we are welcoming around a million new customers into our stores every year.

“But there are also hundreds of towns across the UK where there is not an Aldi, meaning there are hundreds of thousands of people who can’t easily access the high quality, affordable food our customers love.

“We are willing to explore all opportunities, including developer-led schemes or existing retail units.”

Jobs at the new Lidl store, which is located off the A18 Queensway, are now being advertised online.
