Bomb disposal experts rush to Cleethorpes beach

Bomb disposal experts from the Army were rushed to Cleethorpes beach yesterday after a walker discovered a giant artillery shell in the sand.
Cleethorpes Coast Guard received a call from the Cleethorpes Beach Safety team at around 17:10hrs following a report by a member of the public that he had found what he believed to be a bomb.
The discovery near Anthony’s Bank triggered an emergency response.
The team attended the scene and confirmed the object to be an Armstrong shell, circa late 1800s – early 1900s.
It is the second of its kind to be found in a similar location in the past few weeks.
Bomb disposal experts from Nottingham attended the location on Cleethorpes beach and blew the shell up in a controlled explosion.
A statement issued by the Cleethorpes Coastguard reads:
“We strongly advise anyone who finds these types of objects, to not touch them as it can never be confirmed that they do not still contain High Explosive (HE).
“If you do find suspected EOD, do not touch it. Call 999 and ask for the Coastguard. Please wait in the area at a safe distance to show us where the object is.
“If you have a location indicating app on your phone, something like What3Words, please log the location and pass it to the Coastguard operations centre when you speak to them.”
