A member of staff at a school in Scunthorpe has tested positive for Covid-19, according to a statement.

Parents of children attending St Lawrence Academy have been informed of the situation, which affects Year 8 and 9 pupils who were set to return over the next two weeks.

According to the school, the member of staff was asymptomatic, but booked a test after hearing on Friday evening that a contact they had previously been with outside the academy a few days earlier, had been confirmed with coronavirus.

They received a positive test result on Sunday.

The member of staff had not had contact with any of the children, but had seen other workers at the school.

This means that while none of the students have been in contact with the member of staff, the return of Year 8 and 9 students has now had to be rescheduled.

20% of the academy’s workforce are now also having to self-isolate for two weeks, having been identified through Test and Trace.

Principal Mr Adnitt said:

“We appreciate this will cause a great deal of inconvenience to Years 8 and 9 and their families at a time when everybody was just getting back to normality.

“Any students in Y8 or Y9 who accessed key worker or vulnerable provision during lockdown last term should email lnikolaidis@tsla.co.uk to arrange emergency provision. However, this is only open to those students who accessed this provision last term.

“Our primary concern is that students and staff are safe. The measures outlined above have been taken in consultation with Public Health England and following instructions from NHS Test and Trace.

“They are precautionary but necessary to prevent further spread of the virus.

“We send our best wishes to the member of staff affected.”

The school remains open to all other pupils, with Mr Adnitt stressing that “Years 7, 10 and 11 should attend school as normal over the next two weeks.”

Like many others, the school has implemented a series of social distancing and safety measures including enhanced cleaning, one-way systems and restricted social bubbles.
