New Grimsby Ice Rink facility sees a dream come true

Grimsby Ice Rink is close to realising a dream with the opening of an exciting new facility.

A ‘disused and dismal’ plant room has been transformed into a beautiful self-contained studio.

A spokesperson for Grimsby Ice Rink said: “We decided to turn a depressing situation into an opportunity to create something we have been dreaming of since day one.

“Rather than sit around during lockdown we have created what we think is something rather special.”

The studio has been kitted out with bright LED lighting and hard-wearing laminate floor. It will also have a full wall of mirrors.

“At 41 sq m with its own entrance it is perfect for small classes such as yoga/pilates or stretching,” said a spokesperson.

“We have also made sure to add plenty of sockets so with some tables and chairs it will make a great meeting or small training room.

“On top of all this it will become a vital extra space for any parties held in Grimsby Ice Rink as they will use this warm, clean space for after-skating food.”

The studio was the original plant room, with a mass of compressors, tanks and pipes used to chill the ice pad. None of this had been used since 2014 when the operator at that time had a terminal failure with the system. It was decommissioned but not stripped out.

“We are so very excited about this,” said the spokesperson. “We are really hoping to get it open in the next week or so.”

The build has been funded by profits from the last couple of years.

Grimsby Ice Rink is a charity formed to run the facility after it was transferred from North East Lincolnshire Council. The rink was taken over by a community group in 2017 from the council, as it was threatened with closure.

“As for the main rink we need to service our machinery before we can set a date (for reopening) but we are on with it,” added the spokesperson.
