A retired Church of England priest from Humberston is due in court today after a police investigation into alleged indecent assaults on young boys.

Father Terry Atkinson (68) has been summoned to appear at Lincoln Magistrates’ Court.

Father Atkinson, of Tetney Road, has been summoned to appear for five offences of sexual assault, contrary to the Sexual Offences Act 1956.

Some of the offences are alleged to have occurred while he was involved with St John and St Stephen’s Church Centre, which is now known as the Shalom Youth Project, in Grimsby.

Father Atkinson, who has been a local man for most of his life, also served at St Francis Church in Cleethorpes and at St Andrew’s Church in Albion Street, Grimsby.

A statement from Lincolnshire Police said: “The summons follows an investigation into alleged indecent assaults on boys.

“Some of the offences are alleged to have occurred while he was involved with St John and St Stephen’s Church Centre, which is now known as the Shalom Youth Project, Grimsby.”

The investigation was part of Lincolnshire Police’s Operation Redstone, which looked into alleged non-recent sexual offences
