New arts project at St James Square

Grimsby residents are being invited to take part in a series of pop-up workshops as part of a new arts project titled ‘Our Haven/Our Big Picture’.

The workshops are part of the ongoing transformation of St James’ Square.

‘Our Haven/Our Big Picture is a community heritage and arts project that gives everyone from Grimsby the opportunity to explore in their own way our heritage of memories, places, objects, beliefs, and legends.

So far more than 50 people have been involved in an event held recently at Freeman Street Market.

Grimsby based artist Annabel McCourt was behind the lens photographing local subjects, and has now organised a number of other pop-up events.

The images are to be used to create copper figures, which will be recognisable as the photographed people.

Together they will form part of her ‘Murmuration’ art piece to be displayed within the new-look Square.

Future events will be held at Freeman Street Market on Saturday 3 October and Friday 23 October between 11am to 2pm.

And, at Grimsby Top Town Market on Thursday 22 October, Saturday 24 October, and Saturday 7 November between 11am to 2pm.

Councillor John Fenty said:

“In transforming areas of Grimsby, we wanted to involve the people of our town, so they embrace what we are doing and can look at art and culture perhaps in a different way.

“It is fantastic that Annabel’s work is already seeing that happen.”

The main development includes new paving, landscaping, lighting, seating and the creation of a good events space.

These are on schedule to complete on time early next year.

The Fishermen’s Memorial Statue will be returning as part of the overall re-design, positioned so people can easily be off the main walkways when attending events that it is central to.

Those wishing to get involved in the arts project can find further details here.
