Warning as dogs return to Cleethorpes beach

The Cleethorpes branch of The Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) has issued a warning to dog owners as the seasonal beach ban is lifted.

Dogs banned from the central areas of Cleethorpes beach between the 10th of April and the 30th of September every year.

As such, from today, they are once again permitted to use the full length of the coast.

But, the RNLI have urged people to exercise caution, after two dogs and their owners had to be rescued from an isolated sandbank at Humberston yesterday.

A spokesperson for the organisation reported the incident via social media:
“If you’re taking your pooches out on the beach, be aware of the tide times and don’t let them end up like these two, who we rescued from a sandbank at Humberston yesterday (along with their owners, of course!)
“They were a bit nervous about getting in the boat, but once in were happy to be fussed over on the short trip back to dry land.”
In 2017, 97 dog walking incidents were attended by lifeguards.
Should you get into trouble the RNLI have advised against attempting to rescue a family pet from the water.
Instead, the organisation have issued a number of safety tips including keeping dogs securely on leads and avoiding fast flowing bodies of water.
In emergencies people are advised to call 999 or 112 and ask for the coastguard.
North East Lincolnshire Council also recently urged locals to use other open spaces to exercise their dogs, in order to maintain social distancing measures.

Councillor Stewart Swinburn, portfolio holder for environment and transport, said:

“We understand people want to get out the house and exercise with their dogs, but there are other places to enjoy a walk.

“Instead, you can walk between Cleethorpes Leisure Centre and the Humberston Fitties – all while keeping a safe distance.

“If you do choose to use the beach for exercise, please follow the advice from Government and maintain social distancing. Be responsible.

“The beach will still be here when all this is over, so please, I urge everyone in North East Lincolnshire to be responsible. Stay at home. Protect the NHS. Save lives.”
