A18 to close for four months as new roundabout is built
Major disruption looks set to hit motorists with the final phase of improvements to the A18.
The works will start on February 1 with the construction of a roundabout at the Waltham Road junction to replace the existing T-junction and should be completed in May.
A road closure will be in place from the A18/A46 roundabout to the Ashby Hill roundabout on the A18.
A closure will also be in place restricting access from Barnoldby-le-Beck to the A18.
Access for residents will be maintained and directly affected businesses will be engaged with to discuss access requirements, said North East Lincolnshire Council.
HGVs will not be able to access the A18 during the closure and will be diverted to use the A46/A16.
The decision to install a roundabout has been made to reduce the number of accidents at this location, to slow the flow of traffic and to make oncoming vehicles more visible to those at the junction, said the council.
Councillor Stewart Swinburn, portfolio holder for environment and transport, said: “I understand the impact road closures on the A18 have on local businesses and residents. We’ve co-ordinated these works to take place with minimal disruption, predominantly to not coincide with the Toll Bar improvements.
“During this phase, alterations to the road level will be made. With this taking place, it would not be safe to allow the workforce to be working below the height of a live carriageway. All options for traffic management have been considered and a road closure is the only safe option to carry out these works.
“As we enter the final stage of the A18 programme, I would like to thank residents and businesses for their understanding while we’ve carried out this £2.8m road safety improvement programme on this key stretch of road that has been all about making the road a safer place for everyone that uses it.”
Residents and businesses with queries and concerns regarding access can email the project team at A18SaferRoadsScheme@nelincs.gov.uk. All comments will be considered, but the preferred and safest option of a road closure will not be changed.
