An uninsured driver has appeared at Grimsby Crown Court after he led police on an erratic 20-mile pursuit through Grimsby and Immingham.

George Burchell, 31, refused to stop when requested by Humberside Police officers, instead opting to jump a red light as he wove erratically between cars.

The court heard how he drove down into oncoming traffic down the wrong side of the A1173, carrying speeds of 70mph in 30mph zones.

He eventually mounted the grass at Grant Thorold park in Grimsby in an attempt to evade the authorities.

Fortunately, nobody was injured in the pursuit.

Upon capture, he was charged with dangerous driving, failing to stop for police, and driving without insurance – he also only had a provisional licence.

Burchell agreed to a roadside test, where he showed positive for cocaine.

He refused to provide a blood sample at the police station, but admitted all the charges in court.

This is George Burchell’s first offence.

As such, he received a 12 month prison sentence, suspended for 18 months, as well as an order to complete 100 hours of unpaid work.

He has also been banned from driving for a year – he will be subject to an extended retest if he wanted a licence following the suspension.
