Second MRI scanner arrives at Grimsby Hospital for its new state-of-the-art MRI suite

The second MRI scanner arrived at Grimsby’s Diana, Princess of Wales Hospital this morning, following the first delivery last weekend.

The machines are being installed in the hospital’s new MRI suite, which is set to open in the near future.

Jug Johal, Director of Estates and Facilities at the North East Lincolnshire & Goole NHS Foundation Trust, said:

“We are very excited to be almost ready to open our new state of the art MRI Suite at Diana, Princess of Wales Hospital, Grimsby.

“Both our contractors and hospital project team worked together to ensure both scanners fit through the small hole into the new scanning room.

“The current MRI scanner is 15 years old and we have to rely on mobile scanners, therefore these two new scanners will make a big impact for both staff and patients.”

The new MRI Suite is just one of the current developments taking place at the hospital, following the January opening of the new £1.6m Coastal CT Suite.

Yesterday, full planning permission was also granted for the construction of a brand new A&E department at both Grimsby and Scunthorpe’s hospitals.

Regarding the new Accident & Emergency department, a statement from the NHS reads:

“The developments on both sites will include new Accident and Emergency departments, complemented by bespoke Acute Assessment Units (AAU).

“These new AAU will be staffed by specialists in a range of conditions and illnesses, allowing patients to be seen and treated more quickly, often without the need to be admitted to a ward.

Our number one priority is to give patients the best possible care and these works will give our staff the space, equipment and facilities they need to do that.

Mr Johal said: “Our number one priority is to give you the best possible care and these works will give us the space, equipment and facilities we need to do that, as well as reducing waiting times in A&E and making faster diagnosis by directing patients to specialist clinicians more quickly.

“This is hugely important to us and, to ensure we get this right, we have worked closely with clinical colleagues throughout the design process.”

The £8.84m MRI Suite is set to open to the public this Spring.
