White palm tree in Cleethorpes will not be built, it has been confirmed

It has been confirmed today by North East Lincolnshire Council that the sculpture of the white palm tree in Cleethorpes will not be going ahead.

This comes after the Leader of North East Lincolnshire Council, Cllr Phillip Jackson, voiced his doubts on BBC Radio Humberside yesterday about the proposed sculpture for the North Promenade, which was set to be 72-foot tall.

The council have blamed the cancellation of the White Palm sculpture on “delays on the project” and “escalating costs”.

They said that councillors want to look at a “wider plan” on the future of Cleethorpes.

In a statement released a short while ago, the council wrote: “As work on the resort masterplan starts, North East Lincolnshire Council has confirmed that – due to delays on the project over the last year, and escalating costs – the White Palm art installation on the North Prom will not now take place.

“Instead, councillors want to relook at the whole of the tourism offer and regeneration along the North Prom as part of a wider plan for the future of the resort.”

Explaining the decision, Cllr Philip Jackson said that the idea of public art on the prom was generated some time ago at the start of the Coastal Communities Fund (CCF) project.

He said: “The CCF project has delivered on a whole new look to the resort already.

“With two major art pieces already installed on the North Prom – furniture and shutter art, and a third to follow (Luminations) being installed in the late summer ahead of the darker nights.

“The decision we have taken on the White Palm hasn’t been an easy one, but there were a number of factors we had to take into consideration including the COVID related delays and escalating costs.

“This last year has changed the focus of many people and businesses, as well as our own, and we think it’s important to take a fresh look at the resort as a whole and plan for its future.

“However, I’d like to publicly thank the artist, Wolfgang Weileder, for his vision and his work on the concept project. The White Palm was certainly a talking point, but ultimately, unfortunately, become unviable for us to deliver.

“As we go through the Masterplan process, we want to harness the passion for the resort that the last few years of work has generated and encourage people to get involved to help us decide what will be best for the whole of Cleethorpes.”
