Excitement as first details released for Armed Forces Weekend

The first details for the upcoming Armed Forces Weekend, set to take place on 25, 26 and 27 June, have been released to the public.

The widely anticipated annual event has been scaled down this year due to coronavirus restrictions and will be ticketed, with five timed sessions taking place over the weekend.

Instead of the large-scale parade on the Promenade which attracts locals and visitors in their thousands, Armed Forces Weekend will be held at the Meridian Showground for this year only.

Static displays this year will include the Royal Anglian Regiment, 250 Medical Corps and the Royal Logistics Corps, as well as recruiting stalls staffed by all three armed forces.

There will also be an extensive food court, a display from the 1940s medical display team, and combat vehicles will be on show.

In each two-hour timed slot, ticket holders can enjoy a full arena display from the Lancers, along with musical entertainment and a display from the Combat Vehicle Reconnaissance (Tracked) – also known as CVRT.

On Sunday, the Les Springall Big Swing Band will be performing live on the stage during the afternoon.

Alex Baxter, Armed Forces Champion, said: “Over the years, AFMET has grown our hugely successful Armed Forces Weekend to be the largest free event along the whole of the East Coast and we assure people that will return next year.

“However, for this year only, we’re holding it in Meridian Showground in order to help manage the numbers of people attending and provide a Covid-safe environment, as we’re still in restricted times.

“We’re renowned for putting on a great show in Cleethorpes and people always turn out to show support for the armed forces and their families. We’re looking forward to a great event and hopefully, a sunny weekend!”
