Mayor of North East Lincolnshire takes to the skies in charity skydive

Councillor David Hasthorpe, the Mayor of North East Lincolnshire, took to the skies on Saturday and leapt 15,000 from a plane to raise money for St Andrew’s Hospice.

Raising £1,550 for the local charity, Cllr Hasthorpe said the jump was a “remarkably exhilarating” feeling.

He said: “It’s a remarkably exhilarating feeling jumping out of an aircraft! Freefalling 6,000ft and then gently drifting the other 9,000 with a sense of serenity and chatting to your co-jumper is just surreal.

“It was amazing to see the Dock Tower and the villages from that height.

“I would like to take this opportunity to say a big thank you to all those who have supported me including those that have sponsored my jump and helped me to raise money for St Andrew’s Hospice.

“So far the total raised for St Andrew’s Hospice is £1550 – a great amount of money for a truly wonderful cause.”

Andy’s – which assists young people from the local area with life-limiting conditions – is one of three chosen charities for Cllr Hasthorpe’s Mayoral year.

During the two decades since its establishment, Andy’s has provided a safe place for thousands of families.

Emily Aitken, fundraising and events lead at St. Andrew’s Hospice, said: “We are so grateful to Councillor Hasthorpe for taking on such an incredible challenge to raise funds and awareness of Andy’s children’s hospice services – the staff at Andy’s couldn’t believe it when we told them about his sky dive.

“Not only has Councillor Hasthorpe shown us an incredible support, he was smiling the whole day and kept us entertained whilst the weather was clearing up enough to jump.”

£1,550 has so far been raised – but there is still time to donate.
