PM’s Plan B rules slammed by Conservative MPs

Boris Johnson has urged people to work from home from Monday as part of new measures implemented by the government in a bid to curb Omicron infection rates.

Under Plan B, people in England will also be required to wear face masks in more places and will have to display an NHS Covid Pass to gain entry to several public venues.

The new rules do not prohibit Christmas parties from going ahead.

But the Prime Minister has faced a backlash of anger from the public and MPs, including many from his own party.

Many have accused the PM of imposing the rules as a “diversionary tactic” to distract from the ongoing row over a lockdown-breaking Christmas party held at Downing Street last year.

Tense scenes at the House of Commons saw one Conservative MP yell at Johnson, calling for his resignation. Others have branded the measures “illogical” and “baffling.

Tory MP Greg Smith MP added: “We are being encouraged to go to Christmas parties while being told to avoid the office at all costs.

“These rules are absurdly baffling to even the most authoritarian lockdown supporter.”

We contacted local MPs for their position on the new measures.

Martin Vickers, MP for Cleethorpes, said: “If the Government come to the conclusion that it is necessary then I will support it though it is certainly not welcome as it would come as a massive blow to the hospitality sector.”

Lia Nici has been contacted for a statement but has not responded.
