Local Game store set to close
The Grimsby branch of Game is set to shut in another devastating blow for Freshney Place, it has been confirmed.
Game have been contacted for a statement and an official closure date.
The news comes days after Freshney Place was been placed into receivership following a string of financial difficulties.
The centre is expected to remain open as usual for the time being.
A spokesperson for former owners Capreon said: “We can confirm that Cushman & Wakefield were appointed as Fixed Charged Receivers over Freshney Place Shopping Centre on January 18, 2022.
“Capreon has been retained by the Receivers to continue their role as asset managers for the shopping centre which will remain open for trading as normal.”
Fashion retailer New Look is also set to close this Sunday.
It was initially thought that the store would be moving to a different unit within Freshney Place but it has now been confirmed that the store will in fact be closing altogether.
A spokesperson for the company has stated that the landlord decided to end the lease early in turn forcing the closure.
A statement issued by New Look reads: “Regrettably the New Look store in Freshney Place will be closing in January after the landlord decided to exit the lease early.
“Whilst it was therefore not our decision to close the store, we are focusing on supporting our store colleagues and where possible finding alternative roles for them within the business.”
Locals have responded with frustration following the announcement that another major store is set to depart the area.
One local said: “Another one?! Something needs to be done to stop this happening. New Look is a popular clothing shop it make no sense to shut it down!”
“They might as well close Freshney Place there’s that many empty shops,” added another.
North East Lincolnshire Council say they are still pushing ahead with plans for a new cinema and market hall in Grimsby town centre.
