Council given £1m for Sea Road development – but where has it gone?

The site of the former Waves club on Sea Road, Cleethorpes, remains vacant despite a £1m investment from the Humber LEP‘s local growth fund.

It was thought that work would commence at the plot on Sea Road in line with other works after the former Waves nightclub was demolished.

However, the site has remained vacant ever since.

Now, North East Lincolnshire Council have responded to questions surrounding what has happened to funding.

In a statement issued to Gi Grimsby news, a spokesperson said: “The £1m from Government, via the Humber Local Enterprise Partnership, has been spent on the demolition of the old building on the site and clearing the site ready for a new build.”

According to the terms of the agreement between the council and Humber LEP, the funds had to be spent by the end of March 2021.

“Additional to this, the money has also funded changes to the footpaths on Sea Road to make them wider, safer, and more attractive for pedestrians,” added the council.

“The work has aimed to help bring the site forward, enhance the environment and give confidence to developers. ”

The original proposal for a multi-purpose building on the site was formed as part of a Cleethorpes regeneration program which included several major heritage projects.

Speaking at the time Councillor John Fenty said: “I want to assure people that we are actively looking at ways in which we can use the site to offer significant benefit to Cleethorpes as this is a prime area in the resort and one which we are sure will be very popular.”

In an updated statement Councillor Philip Jackson, Leader of North East Lincolnshire Council said: “As you’re aware, we’re just completing the Cleethorpes Masterplanning work, which has had more than 2,700 people tell us what they want to see in Cleethorpes in the future, including opinions about this site.”

“This is a key site in a prime location in Cleethorpes and work is continuing in the background to find the best use for the site which is being proactively marketed through commercial agents.”

A “national marketing campaign” is said to be underway to find an operator for a “planned new multi-functional building.”
