Almost £20,000 raised to allow Grimsby fans to watch their club in action

Almost £20,000 has been raised to allow Grimsby Town fans to watch their club in action in the play-off final on Sunday.

Incredible generosity has flooded social media in the past days following the play-off final ticket price announcement.

Fans used words such as “disgusting” and “scandalous” to describe the ticket prices, a figure that would only increase after travel and accommodation was added to the total.

In a joint effort, the footballing community came together to help those struggling to obtain a ticket for the final.

The Mariners Trust began taking monetary donations receiving almost £20,000, thanks to the generosity of popular local businesses, and most importantly, everyday people who just want to help.

Now, in a statement, Grimsby Town Football Club thanked everyone for their contributions, saying:

“Grimsby Town FC would like to place on record their heart-felt thanks to everyone who has contributed to the Mariners Trust’s appeal to support families being able to afford tickets for Sunday’s Promotion Final”

“While we were in discussion with the National League about Concession tickets in the Upper Tier, we worked with our friends at the Mariners Trust who acted quickly to devise a way for donations to be received so that our young supporters wouldn’t have to pay £40+ for a ticket or risk missing out on seeing their team in a big final, while also helping families who are struggling to afford the cost of travelling to London this weekend”, they added.

“We have been totally overwhelmed by the generosity of our fans, and others from all over the country, to donate to this appeal, and the £18k+ raised already means that around 900 Under 16s could be able to claim subsidised tickets and at time when households face probably the toughest economic situation in a generation”

Additionally, the National League has agreed to fund travel for 500 tickets donated by Camelot. League sponsor, Vanarama, have also been in touch with the Mariners Trust to further increase the charitable mission.

“On this occasion, football is the winner, and for that we are very proud”, Grimsby Town said.

The reaction to the impressive total raised as of Tuesday 31 May echoed words of appreciation and pride, one proud Town fan said:

“Forever proud of my club and my town”

“So proud of my hometown and club”, added another Mariner.

Well done to everybody involved!
