Iron gaffer discusses ‘very good’ opening pre-season week

The Scunthorpe United manager sat down with Iron Player following defeat in their first pre-season fixture.

Keith Hill praised his roster following a 3-2 defeat against Middlesbrough U23s, stating he was “really pleased” with his players’ effort.

Liam Feeney and Joe Nuttall were both on the scoresheet for the Iron during the pre-season clash played behind closed doors.

Hill stated he was extremely proud of his players for their hard work and energy especially under “difficult circumstances,” adding:

“We were a little bit sloppy in possession at times and we didn’t seem to have the type of energy (we need), but I know the energy will come. It’s about basics, good habits and continually going through the processes of repeat, repeat, repeat in what we’re doing in and out of possession.

“From a game perspective it was just another training ground exercise against different opposition than what we’re used to on a daily basis.”

The Iron boss further suggested yesterday’s (2 July) match was a “superb exercise” for things to come, and the expectations that he has for his players, as life in the National League edges ever closer.

Unfortunately, Hill confirmed his roster had sustained an injury through Ethan Young, labelling it as a “slight concern,” adding that he is hopeful the young Scunthorpe star will be back in training this week.

Hill added: “As a manager, I like working pre-season and those six weeks to put down an imprint of the identity, and the players are doing everything they possibly can to fulfil what we’re doing on the training pitch and taking it into a matchday.

“The lads have been exceptional in their efforts, endeavours and desires, and now it’s just making sure we brush up, scratch up and improve on the basics.”

The Iron gaffer concluded the interview answering a question pertaining to transfer prospects, stating he will “remain patient,” before adding:

“What we do need is more players and the opportunity to recruit to make the squad better, so we have that real competition for places and that stimulates success.”
