Scunthorpe parents react following ‘confusing’ uniform rules
Scunthorpe parents have continued to issue their opinions following school uniform controversy at a local school.
Outwood Academy Brumby have received backlash towards their school uniform policy, sparked mostly by a BBC Look North interview featuring concerned pupils and their thoughts on the warmer weather conditions.
Despite the incredibly warmer weather experienced across the country, Outwood Academy still required their pupils to bring their dark coloured, heavy branded blazers to school. According to several reports, students were either sent home or faced disciplinary actions if they failed to bring their blazers.
Earlier in the week, one student told BBC Look North the heavyweight attire made her feel “suffocated and trapped” adding students could only remove their jackets if the headteacher eased the mandate.
Since the controversy exploded, the school had issued a response which stipulated pupils could remove their jackets whilst walking around the campus, but still had to bring the attire with them to school.
According to one parent, her son told her: “staff put everyone who refused to wear a blazer in a separate classroom” before claiming “he was then sent home.”
Then, a teacher who educates across Lincolnshire argued his school had allowed students to wear branded PE kits to school, adding: “Pupils are better dressed for weather, and all still in a school issued uniform.” – this notion garnered a lot of positivity from parents of students attending Outwood Academy Brumby.
“If they are allowed to take them off (blazers), they are expected to carry them, can’t put them in their bag, it’s so pathetic they need to recognise that everyone feels the heat differently, and are affected differently,” added another frustrated parent.
Then, this morning, Outwood Academy Brumby issued the following statement:
“Due to predicted temperatures, today students will not be required to wear their blazers.
“We do ask students to still bring their blazer in, due to any changes in climate and cooler classrooms; the blazer may be folded in their bag. Thank you for your continued support.”
With the school’s latest update, hopefully students will no longer feel the negative side effects of the heat.
How have other schools delt with the warmer temperatures?
