An update on waste disposal in Immingham and Grimsby

North East Lincolnshire Council have issued an update on waste disposal and recycling in Immingham and Grimsby.

Limitations had previously been put in place, and now Immingham Community Recycling Centre has been closed until further notice in response to the Covid-19 crisis.

Grimsby Community Recycling Centre remains open but with strict limitations in place:

  • Only household waste and recycling that is usually collected at the kerbside will be accepted.
  • Mattresses, furniture, garden waste, white goods, building material etc. will not be accepted.
  • Only four cars are allowed on site at any one time, and they must observe strict social distancing measures.
  • Households are allowed only one visit per day.

Portfolio Holder for Environment and Transport and North East Lincolnshire Council, Councillor Stewart Swinburn, said:

“People must stay at home to limit the spread of Coronavirus, protect the NHS and help save lives. But last weekend the tips in Grimsby and Immingham had a deluge of visitors.

The only reasons to leave home are to shop for basic necessities or pick up medicine, travel to work when you absolutely cannot work from home, and to exercise once a day, alone or with members of your household.

This isn’t a Bank Holiday. People who ignore the advice are risking the safety of others and putting an extra burden on health workers.

People need to manage their waste while we’re being asked to stay at home. This is a national emergency.

Our advice is to avoid creating extra waste where you can and hang on to it until the restrictions are lifted.

And don’t be tempted to fly-tip. Fly-tipping is an offence and offenders will be prosecuted.”

Councils across the country are closing recycling centres following a surge in visitor numbers last weekend.

Household bin, recycling box and garden waste collections are still running but there has been some delays this week. Plans are in place to keep the service running.

North East Lincolnshire Council have said that households can help by washing their hands after handling bins and boxes, as waste staff touch over 600 each per day. They have also requested that households maintain distance from the bin crews.
