It has been confirmed that a new temporary mortuary is to be built in Hull in response to the overwhelming impact of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Hull City Council have said that the new facility will be sited at the former McBride’s site on Stockholm Road, and will supplement Hull’s existing mortuary provisions.

The council have said:

“The mortuary will help to ensure that local authorities across the Humber meet the requirements of the Coronavirus Act 2020, which passed into law on 27 March.

The plans are part of the strategic response to the pandemic led by Humber Local Resilience Forum (Humber LRF) and will supplement existing mortuary provision on the North Bank and South Bank.”

Chris Blacksell, chair of Humber LRF, says:

“Tragically, we anticipate the number of deaths in our region will rise and this is why we must ensure we have in place adequate mortuary space to manage this.

All partners in the Humber LRF want to ensure each person receives respectful, dignified care on their final journey and this facility is essential to that.”

As of yesterday, Public Health England had recorded 38 cases of Covid-19 in Hull.

13 people have died from the virus in the Hull University Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust area.

There are now 51,608 cases across the UK.
