Two historic ships have sailed away from Hull, arriving at their new home in Alexandra Quay Marina, Grimsby.

The vessels, HMS Pickle and Spider T. Humber Super Sloop, have been moved due to a “lack of support from the council”, according to one source.

It has been suggested that owner Mal Nicholson has been offered a greater degree of support from authorities in Grimsby.

Mr Nicholson said:

“I have truly enjoyed working with the people of Hull who have supported us but unfortunately for the project to move forward it cannot happen with no support from the authorities.

“Together we achieved great things in Hull and as ambassadors for the Sailors Childrens Society a wonderful Hull based charity and flying the flag for Hull.”

The Spider T. Humber Super Sloop is A ship of the National Historic Fleet launched in 1926 at Warrens Yard New Holland.

She was built for cargo carrying and worked as such until 1972.

Later, she was sunk, refloated and was used by Rotherham Police.

In 1994 the Spider T. was restored to her original Edwardian condition by current owner Mal Nicholson.

The original HMS Pickle was constructed in 1800, and is a 10-gun Topsail Schooner.

It was the first ship to return from the Battle of Trafalgar, bringing the news of Lord Nelson’s Victory.

She was sadly wrecked in 1808.

This model, built in 1995, is named in honour of HMS Pickle, but is not an exact replica.

The historic ships have been berthed at Hull Marina for several years, but have now been relocated to Alexandra Quay Marina in Grimsby.

HMS Pickle is owned by Historic Motor and Sail, and travels the east coast of England throughout the summer months.

In 2010, HMS Pickle featured as part of a BBC program about ‘The Boats that Built Britain’.
