Trails for 24hr vaccinations to start in UK

A 24 hour vaccination roll out will be piloted in London by the end of the month, vaccines minister,  Nadhim Zahawi has confirmed.

Mr Zahawi, Minister for COVID Vaccine Deployment, said the coronavirus scheme could be expanded across the country but  it must first be trial led in hospitals in the capital and that it would ‘absolutely’ begin before February.

He backed the target to offer a first jab to everyone in the nation by September, however warned that vaccine supply ‘remains challenging’ and said it is the limiting factor in the roll out.

The target will become priority once over-70s have been offered first jabs in areas only where ‘the majority’ of over-80s have had their first shot.

The Government announced that the UK would now move ahead with offering the over-70s Covid jabs starting from this week.

In the UK more than 3.8 million people have now been given their first doses and over half of the over-80s have had the jab.

The Prime Minister said:“We have a huge network of 233 hospitals, 1,000 GP surgeries, 200 pharmacies and 50 mass vaccination centres and they are going exceptionally fast.”

On average 140 jabs are being administered by the NHS every minute and the new targets are “achievable” parliament members said.

There will be a press conference from Downing Street later today.
