Man raided elderly woman’s homes as she slept

A burglar who raided an elderly woman’s home as she slept exited with a collection of various items, of sentimental value, including jewellery.

The pensioner woke at 7am the next day to find a window had been smashed at the property and the rooms had been raided, all of the rooms whilst she slept.

It is understood the man went on the carry out further burglaries at another residence, reportedly driving in a vehicle associated with the stolen items.

Joshua George, 27, of Castle Street, Grimsby, admitted two offences of burglary and handling a stolen car, having no insurance and no driving license.

Prosecuting, Craig Lowe, stated the woman lived alone at the property in Waltham, going to bed at around 9pm on September 19th.

She had secured the premises, closing all the windows but awoke to find them open at 7am the next day.

“She went to check on a jewellery box in the main bedroom but found that it had gone” said Mr Lowe.

The box was understood to contain items of sentimental value, including rings, charm bracelets, watches and a locket, later being identified via a neighbours CCTV system.

The man then committed the second burglary in Waltham, reportedly whilst the occupant was away, getting away with expensive items including watches, rings and a wedding ring.

The items par one ring were recovered in a stolen vehicle associated with the crimes, being spotted on Grant Street, Cleethorpes at 4:30am on November 28th, being driven at speed.

Joshua George handed himself in to Birchin Way Police station on December 27th- he had convictions for 62 previous offences, including 24 for dishonesty such as burglary, attempted burglary and theft as well as assault, taking a vehicle without consent, criminal damage and breaching a domestic violence protection order.

Ben Hammersley, mitigating, said “He was taking drugs at the time and, in reality, this made things a whole lot worse.

“He wants to turn his life around and go back to being a productive member of society.”

George was jailed for two years and seven months.
